hamilton & co is the name of a famous jewelry and silversmithing shop in colonial india. Established over 200 years ago during the peak of the british raj, it started operating in 1803, when, after his arrival in calcutta, robert hamilton, a british national, opened the store in calcutta, under license from the east indian company. Later hamilton & co also opened branches in other parts of india: bombay (1833 -36 and from 1868) delhi and simla (from 1865).
apart from serving the british civilians, hamilton & co also catered the indian aristocracy and quickly gained popularity among them for its authenticity and unique artisanship. Rajas and maharajas, along with the other rich and elite locals flocked to the store to buy the exquisite silver items.
within a short time, the company became the official silversmith to the ruling british in india. During those days, it was often said that, no european royalty would leave india without shopping from hamilton & co, as they were considered no less than tiffany's or cartier.
